Brutal Winter Weather In Eastern US

Brutal winter weather continued today in Pennsylvania. A coastal storm left the state with up to a foot of snow on January 25.

Snow plows were brought out again today in Centre county as high winds caused wind chills to -37 (SEE ANIMATION) blew and drifted snow out of fields and onto the roads. "Snow Devils" circled and raced around the back yard at AccuWeather's HeadQuarters in State College.

Central Atlantic Storm Investigators Founder Jesse Ferrell explains the danger of the blowing snow: "When the snow accumulates on roadways due to the wind it can make normally dry roads very dangerous. I hit a patch of snow created by high winds on a concave field which emptied into a sharp curve last night and hit a ditch... a street sign took off the mirror and damaged the back panel of Vehicle #1. The road had been completely clear two hours earlier."

CASI HeadQuarters bottomed out at 5 degrees F this morning, with wind chills to -22, then struggled to make it to 18 degrees this sunny afternoon.

The weather comes on the heels of two weeks of sub-freezing temperatures with many nights in the single digits at HQ (SEE GRAPH) and daily wind chills below zero to the -30's.

To the East of CASI HQ, near CASI Member Charlie Anzman, the National Weather Service warned: "TEMPERATURES WILL DROP STEADILY AFTER SUNDOWN WITH READINGS IN MOST AREAS WELL BELOW ZERO BY DAYBREAK. THESE TEMPERATURES WILL COMBINE WITH THE STEADY NORTHWEST WIND TO PRODUCE EXTREMELY COLD WIND CHILL VALUES OF 25 TO 35 BELOW ZERO OVERNIGHT."

In North Carolina, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport opened partially today - After a two feet of snow from the storm broke three snow records, the airport was closed for a record two-and-a-half days. A record low of 10 degrees was observed at Raleigh this morning.

Further South, Florida and the Bahamas experienced some of the coldest weather ever this morning - Nassau fell to 44 degrees, Miami tied their record at 43, and temperatures were in the low 20's in northern Florida. See also this statement and map from NWS-Miami.
