The best thing to do is to stay home until the roads clear. The plows are hard at work but at the rate the snow is falling, they cannot keep up. The Washington D.C. are is expecting anywhere from 4 to 10 inches of snow. This storm came as quite a surprise to all of us this morning. We did not expect any snow but we are socked in now. Most of the east coast from South Carolina north to Maine is experiencing heavy snowfall. In Fairfax and Manassas, there is an accumulation of at least 4" already. The snow is not expected to stop until late this afternoon. Good luck to those that are trying to drive, the conditions are bad even with 4-wheel drive. > -----Original Message----- > From: smwincva_wxman@webtv.net [SMTP:smwincva_wxman@webtv.net] > Sent: Monday, January 24, 2000 7:49 PM > To: weathernewspaper@onelist.com; WEATHERFUN@onelist.com; > wxmail@listbot.com; stormreports@casiinternal; > VA_StormNet@onelist.com > Subject: [CASI-SR] storm links > > Hello everyone, > > For those who want to read up on the ice & snow that fell on the > south Sat & Sun, here are some links to various newspapers, and a few of > the Atlanta tv stations. > > At last count (6pm Mon) 96,000 are still powerless in N GA, down from > almost a half million Sun afternoon. Dietz Jr./Janet C. DietzKamei" , Heidi Kamei , Rob &Jess Kamei Ft. Lee, Virginia. Near blizzard-like conditions with over 6 inches of snow on the ground. Significant drifts caused by winds gusting 30-35 knots. Ft. Lee has actually closed today. I originally thought that that was an overreaction, but after walking around in this for a few minutes I have changed my mind. At 2330 24 January, I observed rain with sleet coming down. Changover from this mixture to snow began at about 2355 and by 0005 it appeared to have changed completely over to snow. Observed winds appeared to be gusting to about 20 knots. Interestingly, I also saw a herd of 12-14 deer skirting the woodline while the rain/freezing rain/sleet mixture was coming down. At 0655 I saw a changed world. Previous snowfall here did not obfuscate ground features such as sidewalks, manhole covers, etc. This snowfall has smoothed all these things out of view. Winds have caused drifts which are burying vehicles to their leeward in the parking lot. Except for my truck and a few other vehicles parked perpendicularly to the wind direction. Looks as if I only have to worry about clearing away snow for half the vehicle at this point, but I can't see the other side from where I am. I was considerably startled when a gust blew a bunch of snow off the eaves and a line of distrubed snow just seemed to materialize a few inches away from the toes of my shoes (and splattered me). Just about pitched my coffee cup through the upstairs balcony in my surprise. This is indeed quite a spectacle. Howling winds, horizontally flying snow, and snow drifts seem to characterize this situation quite well. -- MICHAEL G. KAMEI, M.En. Snow started here in High Point around 5 pm, then stopped, and started up again around 7 pm, and stopped by 9 pm. In all, we recieved about an inch, if that... Now we are getting light freezing rain. Seems the atmosphere was too dry for the snow to reach the ground in the manner predicted. North of Charlotte, Huntersville recieved about 4-5 inches before it tapered off last night. Most precipitation in NC seems to have fallen closer to the South Carolina border. Snow has remained on the ground for nearly a week here in central NC, which is very unusual for us. Forecasters have had a miserable time predicting these storms. The first one, last Tuesday was under estimated; was to have been under an inch, received 5. The second was overblown; to have received 4-6, actually got 2. Third was played up to have dropped 3-6 inches, got a trace. Today's (Monday's) we weren't to have gotten a thing, and Charlotte got 5 inches, and its southern suburbs received 8! Here in High Point, we have only been threatened with a giant wave of snow menacing a few miles to the southwest. No snow here...yet. This is the first time in my memory of central NC that we have had a weather period such as this...snow after snow. All in all its not paralyzing, but for snow to lay around on the ground for a week, and for it to be added to is exceedingly rare. THIS JUST NEEDS TO END! Snow started just before the eleven o'clock news (great for the hype) and ended by 3 am. No thunder snow here in High Point, but there were reports west of here towards the foothills. Unlike the dry snow earlier in the week, this one is very wet and sticky. Trees are covered and roads are just wet...travel is not a problem, but schools are businesses are closed nonetheless. The axis for Tuesday's snow ran from the northwest to southeast through the Triad cities of Greensboro/Winston-Salem and High Point. Higher amounts northwest of the Triad. This snow simply gets deeper the further north you go towards Virginia, with only a trace reported south of Asheboro and towards Charlotte, and up to six inches near the VA border. At 8 am, its 33 degrees and very foggy, and wet snow is dripping off everything (it's a mess...) Now we wait for round three for more snow Saturday night and Sunday! So much for the southern snow drought of the 1990s... With this sort of practice, we Southerners will become old snow pros by next week! Benj.
