| Distant thunder was noted about 1640. Conditions at the time
included light drizzle and extreme haziness. Visibility was less
than 1 mile. Around 1645 strong thunder heard but no storm structure
evident. At 1650, abrupt darkening, intensified thunder and light
rain, followed by about 3 minutes of hail. Hail was ping-pong ball
to golf ball sized, beginning slowly and ending abruptly. Intense
lightning observed. Approximately 1" of rain fell, but rain
gauge was damaged by hail, so precise measure is impossible. Storm
duration was about 20 minutes. Hail was strong enough to produce .25"
deep dents in aluminum siding, lesser dents in cars. All plastic
items exposed were destroyed, including heavy lawn furniture. |
