The following reports were filed by CASI Members today: ==================================================================== Subject: Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 16:38:50 -0500 (EST) From: To: Well a couple tornadoes were confirmed in PA from yesterdays severe thunderstorms, which formed a NCFR. There were quite a few other reported tornadoes, but these "tornadoes" turned out to be thunderstorm downburst winds... as I expected with some of the reported "tornadoes". Here are some PNS's/LSR's (see URL above) ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Pennsylvania Weather Page - http://www.angelfire.com/pa/pawx ==================================================================== Subject: Hey, about a tornado. Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 17:14:24 -0500 From: To: Hey. Yesterday at 7:00pm there was a real strong gust of wind, 58 MPH. Just a few minutes ago I found out that there was a confirmed tornado in my town, Bryn Athyn. It was just an F1 but it's real rare to see any tornado's around here. The last one that hit my town was June 1st and 2nd of '98 (An F1 on the 1st and an F2 on the 2nd :-). Previous to that it had been about 20 years. One of my friends across town saw the funnel, but not the full tornado. I saw some green / yellow clouds, which I have never seen before, just as the gust hit. A few minutes later the power went out. The tornado ripped a 100 yard wide path from the northwestern to northeastern part of my town for about 1 1/2 miles. We had some small hail and a torrential downpour for about 5 minutes. There are large trees down all over the place, and the Pennypack River flooded over it banks. Like I said before, it's rare for a tornado to come through here, especially this early in the season. I just wanted to let you know. -Rick R -Member of CASI (www.weatherwatchers.org) ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 12:47:36 -0500 (EST) From: To: I live in Ellicott City, Maryland where we were certainly hit hard by the ice storm last Thursday. Over 6,000 homes were without power, then when the ice started to melt it knocked out another 7,000. Yesterday the wind gusted to 23 mph and knocked out even more homes, yours truely included. Today, Tuesday, the electric has been restored, but has gone off again on two separate occasions. Gusts today have been in the 18-20mph range. Marcie Durham (CASI member) ==================================================================== Subject: funnel cloud in Southwestern Virginia Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 10:39:44 EST From: To: Jesse: Yesterday, I was traveling north on Route 29 out of Lynchburg, VA going toward Charlottesville. About one p.m., just a few miles past Lovingston, VA the wind picked up and the tops of trees began to snap off and fall on the road. I looked to the West and a funnel cloud was dropping to the ground. Needless to say, I was intent on getting out of the area. I kept watching the Weather Channel prior to leaving Lynchburg, and WC reported light rain. The true condition was heavy fog until around 9:30 a.m. when it began to lift and a light rain started. By the time WC reported the fog, it had lifted. WC was at least an hour behind the true weather condition in the area.
