Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 14:25:40 -0500 Organization: Central Atlantic Storm Investigators Thought I'd throw in my report from Beverly, Mass. Snow began Friday around 4pm.. Accumulated to about 2.8" before changing to sleet then very quickly to rain around 11:30pm. Temperatures began the day around 21 and rose to 26, dropped to 22 when the snow began.. Climbed to 34F at the time of change over.. We now stand at 58f with Southwest wind at 20 knots gusting to 30 knots.. Very pleasant springlike day... However; the latest 48 hour ETA model shows a VERY strong arctic front on the way, 850mb cold pool of -35C heading southeastward.. The core should get shunted more eastward across northern New England but some very cold air on the way nevertheless and the possibility of an important overrunning situation coming in the 3-5 day period. It's a hoot! ;) http://www.weatherwatchers.org/1999/0108/ -Jesse == Report out of Chambersburg PA: Subject: Winter Storm Report Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 16:55:04 -0500 From: To: Hi Jesse, The second winter storm for 1999 created major road problems for motorists in Franklin Co PA. Roadways were very snowy, slushy, and then icy causing well over 2 dozen crashes. Traffic on I-81 came to a halt both north and southbound for several hours from the icy conditions. Truckers that had slowed down because of the dangerous road conditions found themselves stuck, and could not move as they attempted to climb grades and over bridges. Wreckers had to be called to pull trucks over grades to get them moving once again. After the temperatures began to rise near dawn 9 Jan, and salting of roads traffic began getting back to normal on I-81 and main roads. The next problem was just then starting. Heavy roadway flooding from storm drains being blocked by the plowed snow from the day before. The temperatures continued to rise to 37 degrees when it leveled out for the days high on 9 Jan. Many tree branches were downed from the heavy ice. Roads then began to dry as the afternoon winds picked up. 8 Jan 1999 Snow began falling at 0430 on 8 Jan 1999, and ended at 1330 8 Jan 1998 with a total of 3.25". After a quiet period in the day the sleet then began at 2015 hrs and continued till 2200 hrs giving only a trace of sleet. At which time sleet gave way to freezing rain and continued till 0001hrs with freezing rain of .08 ending the 8 Jan data, giving a total moisture amount of 0.48. 9 Jan 1999 Freezing rain continued until 1330 hrs 9 Jan 1999 giving a total of .66" when clouds began to give way to partial clearing. Temperatures tonight will drop into the single digits and no further precip is expected today. Total liquid from this event is 1.14" B Hile
