Storm Summary
Sunday night 7-12-98 1830 hrs Severe Weather strikes Palm Beach County, FL. Late today, as an usual summer low pressure trough moved south into central and south Florida, the late afternoon weather turned severe. Thousands of severe cloud to ground lightning strikes caused hug power outages, over a large portion of central Palm Beach County, Fl, affecting thousands of residences right at the dinner hour, spurring OVER 14 traffic accidents in a 2 hour DOWNBURST. Streets throughout the city of West Palm Beach had to be closed when rains dumped nearly 3 inches of water in an hour, causing vehicles to be stuck, overwhelmed by localized street flooding. At this hour, no deaths have been reported and only minor injuries as a direct result of the severe weather. Forecasters say Monday afternoon and early evening will bring a 70% chance repeat for another encounter of more severe weather, heavy rains capable of producing more localized street flooding and dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes.
