| This is just a brief note from a weather lover in Myersville,
halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, MD. Last night's storm was
fascinating. We get so few exciting storms here in central Maryland, but
I knew this one was gonna be a good one. The TWC showed "Christmas
tree" cells in red headed directly our way. I watched the storm
develop out of the SW. It got really dark. We board horses so I took the
pre-storm opportunity to feed them, knowing there would be torrential
rain later. There was little rain at first, but then this low cloud
appeared. It was the first time I have ever seen a wall cloud in this
state, and it passed right over MY house! It was very close to the
ground. Of course, higher cloud structure was heavily wrapped in rain
and invisible. However, there WAS rotation, slow and lazy, at the base
of the wall cloud. We were under a tornado warning, and believe me, I
watched that cloud carefully. There was plenty of CG lightning and 70
mph winds. There was also a spatter of hail, but nothing like the "baseball"-sized
hail and tree damage reported in VA. We received 1.5 in rain. All in
all, a very satisfying storm. Hope we get some more. |
